Chapter 10

Judy

While it Lasts

Something was going on in this house, and it seemed as if everyone knew but me. Ricardo had been gone for three days, but he didn’t take his wife with him. She’d been in my wing of the house, if not in my room, the room next to mine. She said the guest house was too big for her. I had asked her where her husband went, and she’d always respond that he was handling business. She didn’t seem to be too worried about him, anyway. Like now, we were getting dressed to go out with Agasha, and she was dressed and drunk before we left the driveway.

Agasha and I watched from the bar as Nadia grinded on some random man in the middle of the dancefloor. I wasn’t judging, and neither was Agasha.

“Not to sound like a hater, but does she have panties on?”

I turned to see the man in question with his hands on her bare ass cheek as she twirled on him. “Nope. She don’t.”

“I figured. Her man is too fine for her to be in here doing all that.”

“She’s not happy. Can't fight with that.”

“Then why not just divorce him? Why make him suffer like this?” I forgot this was a touchy subject for her. she tossed a shot back and asked for another. “I just wish he would’ve said something… anything. You know?”

“You know I get it. I'm the same girl that’s only fucked her man three times since they met. Oh, and his ex-wife is living with us for the summer.”

“Cheers.” She lifted a shot glass, and so did I. “I think I can stand the rain.”

“I think I can, too.”

It was an inside joke we had. We were joking the other day about not knowing we were in survival mode when we were actually in it. So, how would one know if they could stand the rain while it was raining? We were drunk; it didn’t make sense. That’s what made it so funny every time we said it.

“So, guess what?” she said.

“What?”

“My dad had the fucking nerve to call and ask me for money for my sister and her new family. He doesn’t want them living there anymore, so he tasked me with getting them an apartment. I said no, and now I’m blocked.”

“They have nerve. All of them.”

“Her mother called, telling me how a man shouldn’t come between us. This man was my husband. I hate them all.”

“It's okay to cut family off. It’s possible to live without them. I’ve done it all my life.”

“I just might take you up on that.”

Trisha walked between us, obviously drunk, giving Agasha a death stare. She could barely hold herself up. “Jesus, Trisha, you can barely hold yourself up.”

“It’s a guy staring at you from the corner. Be careful. He might rape you and get away with it.”

I stood and kept Trisha from falling. “Okay, that’s enough.” I nodded over at security. “She’s had enough.”

The tall, buff security guard walked over with another one.
